I was able to get my computer to reliably shutdown by doing two things: 1. Update the intramfs: $ sudo update-initramfs -u I'm not sure why this was necessary, since I have the default 21.04 kernel: 5.11.0-16-generic 2. Add `acpi=force` to /etc/default/grub GRUB_

I was able to capture a journalctl logs for a *successful* shutdown. In this log, I see the same GDM error: gdm.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE gdm.service: Failed with result 'exit-code' Therefore, I must conclude that GDM is not the culprit in the shutdown p
