It's basically what I was hoping for in comment #26, but an additional
fix was required.
If that does solve it then potentially a workaround is to just create a
custom wallpaper image that's the same resolution

The first thing I suspect is those PTP errors coming from gvfsd. They
might be triggered by having a phone or camera plugged into the
computer. And that might freeze the GUI if you have a shell extension
trying to access such mounts.

Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid
I have this problem as well on ubuntu 20.10 on a Thinkpad T14 with
integrated Geforce MX330 graphics. My laptop is closed and docked via a
thunderbolt 3 dock to a single external monitor.

Everytime discord registers my voice when in a call, the whole desktop freezes.
