More information, as this continues to occur:
- If I have audio playing (e.g. streaming music in Chrome) then the
audio continues to play smoothly while the input and display lock.

The same problem here with Ubuntu 18.04. Pushing the "Add" button after
giving a caldav address to the gnome-calender isnt possible.

This affects me too. I am on ubuntu 18.04 lts. Trying to add a caldav url to
gnome-calender, the app doesnt let me push the button "add", although I am
pretty sure the url is correct.
My caldav provider is www.posteo.de

I use mouse click and Ubuntu dock.
Even in VM, the deepin launcher is much faster than gnome launcher,
because deepin launcher is written by c++.

That said, even if there's nothing unusual I would expect a VM on a
A8-7410 CPU to run slow. And I would expect Gnome Shell to run slower
than a shell written in C++.

1. Remember to reboot the machine after uninstalling all extensions and
retest.
2. Tell us how you are launching "Show Applications"? Is it via a mouse
click, or keyboard?
3. Are you using the Ubuntu Dock in Gnome Shell or the traditional Gnome
Shell dock?

This problem still occurs.
The deepin launcher is written by c++, the gnome launcher is written by js,
c++ is much faster (at least 5 times) than js I think.
I hope gnome do not use js, use c or c++ to Performance sensitive
feature.

It appears this bug was first reported against gnome-shell
3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4 (from last December). So it doesn't sound like
it's a very new problem. At least not in 'gnome-shell'. It might be a
regression in some other package.
