Okay, before reverting out of curiousity I did try the recently updates
packages and can confirm the issue is resolved, and everything seems
stable, no regressions.

17.10) on your zesty (Ubuntu 17.04) install. Here's how I recommend
getting back to the zesty packages. The gnome-settings-daemon-dev and
gnome-settings-daemon-dbgsym packages are not in the default install and
aren't needed by most

On Ubuntu 16.04 64bits, I can confirm that evince is very very slow with the
following attached PDF (several minutes for opening).
Using firefox pdf.js open it without difficulties.

I made an observation regarding this issue: when switching to grid view
in nautilus, everything works fine. It's just the list view that shows
this behavior.
