I've been unable to get network browsing to work even after installing
samba and disabling the firewall. smbtree -N shows other servers and
shares on the LAN, but Nautilus just shows the Opening... dialog without
making any progress even after several minutes.

- and worse, it crashes sometimes when copying large files :(

I have had this issue in both 14.04 and 16.04 when changing wallpaper.
There is a very high (50%?) chance that changing the wallpaper will
crash nautilus.
Since it might be X related, I'll add that I'm using the open source
"radeon" driver not a proprietary graphics driver.

I think that problem might be related to file in your .local directory.
In short I think that everything should work if you remove both gnome-
panel.desktop

nautilus ignores trash on external drive

Any files deleted from a USB device (sent to the system recycle bin)
don't appear in the system recycle bin in 16.10. However, if I connect
the USB device to another system running 14.04, the files appear in that
system's recycle bin. I can only guess the problem is with Nauti
