Installing gedit (3.18.3) on Ubuntu 16.04 causes two .desktop entries to
be created in /usr/share/applications: org.gnome.gedit.desktop and
gedit.desktop. This causes two "open with" entries in Nautilus/Files.

Lonnie, the only error you should worry about is regarding dependencies
after installing via dpkg. This can be fixed by doing a:
apt-get install -f
The other error is caused by SHA1 removal and can safely be ignored
until the repos are updated:

Ubuntu Software does not install third-party .deb pac
So far, so good. Looks as if the long awaited fix took care of the issue. I
haven't seen the pop-up error yet.
I'll give it a bit more time since I haven't been using this computer for the
past three days.
