The underlying issue (with the PPA) might be that the hud shortcut is
actually set to by default, which is eating the Alt_R modifier.
You'll probably have to do:
gsettings set org.compiz.integrated show-hud "['Alt_L']"
Then Alt_R should work for modifier switching...

I also see this behaviour when running inside a VMWare virtual machine with
open-vm-tools installed.
When the guest display is resized (which seems to occur just after the desktop
is loaded) the top and bottom panels do not scale with it and the WindowPicker
applet is no longer displayed.

I would really love it to be able to have mouse config adjustment
options for the mouse scroll by pixel instead of it jumping per line.
