situation better the real issue is with pulseaudio itself, as you
pointed it out it will affect other clients as well (e.g the indicator)

Had the same "not shutting down" problem, fan continued to run.
I removed the graphics driver $ sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
Then installed the non-experimental one in "additional drivers" through the
software center.
No problems since.
