Just did the latest updates for Lucid Beta 1. I also tried to delete
what I think are my nautilus preferences. I also launched nautilus via
sudo. Nautilus consistently only offers the useless 'Custom Connection'

I cannot reproduce this error. I have version 2.30.0 in lucid beta.
Perhaps having that version fixes the issue?

I cannot reproduce this error on nautilus 2.30.0 ubuntu lucid beta.
1. Opened my trash folder via the icon at the bottom right
2. there were 19 items in the folder, I clicked 'empty trash' near the top right
3. '0 items'

Well I'm very sorry for not knowing that then. I did actually press
"Rapporter Problem", but Launchpad was out cold at that time. Also
