I didn't meet this problem and did you change the install files or
rules in debian directory? Maybe you can move gnome-brightness-applet to
/usr/lib/gnome-power-manager/, this is the right place of this applet.

UPDATE:
During a reboot, I dropped into the terminal from GRUB and did an
update/upgrade. The result was a load of changes (300+). On the reboot,
I got the following warning after about 30 seconds on the desktop:

Hmm, explicitly prohibiting direct user interaction with notifications
does seem like shooting oneself in the foot. For example it puts notify-
osd at an immediate disadvantage when compared to many application-
specific implementations. A case in point being Thunderbird; libnotify

The problem went away for a few weeks and then reappeared. Waiting 30
seconds to open a 1 page pdf is not normal. During the hanging, the cpu
is idling, so it's not doing some heavy duty calculation.

I had this same issue with Karmic. It seems gnome-power-manager gets
confused when the laptop lid is closed and an external monitor is used
instead as the primary display. I wrote a script to set the monitor to
standby and I run it in System,Preferences,Startup Applications.

In current lucid with all updates I can reproduce a segmentation fault
in gnome-appearance-properties in the following way:
1) open "Appearance"
2) choose "Dust" theme
3) customize and choose "Human" icon theme
4) go back to main theme tab and choose "ambiance"
5) result: it crashes every single
** Changed in: gcalctool (Ubuntu)
Status: Triaged => Fix Committed
