I installed Ubuntu 8.04 about a month ago.
I have the same problem on a Dell Inspiron with It used the Intel graphics chip
set.

Suppose, I run a command in gnome-terminal..
$gnome-terminal -e file:///home/shadyabhi/script.sh
Basically, I want to run script in a new terminal. The above command
gives error "There was an error creating child process for this
terminal
I'm experiencing the same problem, and tracked it down to the 'exec'
line in the '.desktop' file. I'm seeing the same behavior, whether I
use the menu editor to create the '.desktop' file, or if I hand-edit the
file to modify the 'exec' line.

Mike: that worked for me. thanks, you're a lifesaver.
Still have no idea how Qgit was being launched instead of Nautilus
though... it started happening after updating some packages (related to
the window manager), but on the other hand, that may just be a
