Problem has been recurring in Karmic with only a few things running in
gnome-panel. dropbox, bluetooth proximity, bluetooth, networkmanager,
volume control, and pavudevchooser or whatever it's called. And the
calendar.

Sorry, forgot to add that I also did:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
and now I no longer get the 256 error.
So in summary:
I- [Could not update ICEauthority file /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority]
Resolved by changing Owner etc permissions via 'gksu nautilus' to:

Nope, I was wrong, it is still there :( It might relate to the D300s
configuration, going back from two memory cards to just the CF one
prompted similar error messages, but re-trying the camera switch made it
operate.
