Another comment is that this bug not only happens in Desktop JPEG
images... it happens when making some copy&paste and deletion of images
or pictures is the Pictures folder... in my case I maintain certain
order of pictures in some folders and happens when I download images
from my mobile phone...
This seems to indicate that Totem components need to have versioned
depends, to ensure that they always pull the latest totem-common.

I've realized this phenomenon in every Ubuntu release I've seen. It
happens regularly when I play a game through Wine and then return from
the fullscreen mode or on other occasions too. And at the next startup
after it happened I find my icons

My problem was associated with the installation of 9.10.
First I 'upgraded' with the online version. Several applications including
Rhythmbox then malfunctioned.
Then I burned a CD and re-installed from that - some problems disappeared but I
still could not get my audio set-up right.
