I got the problem fixed.
I removed the packages that were installed by the metapackage
"ubuntu-restricted-extras".

This sounds more like a problem with the keyboard or some sort of issue
with the standard input. Not specific to gnome-terminal itself.
Can you please give hardware information about your computer?
