I just experienced similar problems in 8.10 Intrepid. Here is what was
happening:
1) Click on the menu to launch nautilus (Places ->Home Folder)
2) Nautilus launches, turns grey within 10 seconds, and consumes 90%+ cpu. Only
way out is to kill the nautilus window

I can confirm that, having mapped Caps Lock to Control, my laptop
keyboard's Caps Lock acts as a control key but my external keyboard's
caps lock does not. Re-mapping it in gnome-keyboard-properties with the
external keyboard connected makes all Caps Locks (including the
laptop's) act as control,

This bug affects me, too. The bigger the window, the slower the tab
change. This is also true for maximizing the window.
During this the processor load rises and even music stops playing for a
few milliseconds!
