Can you attach the original jpg file for testing?
The file shown in the screenshot is missing the DateTime tag, which is
unusual. However, gthumb should still read the DateTimeOriginal tag,
which is present.

Understood that it's not a valid jpeg, but I don't think completely
crapping out is the right response from Gimp. Ideally it would say "this
does not look like a valid JPEG, but here it is anyway". The KDE apps
(gwenview, konqueror, etc) all open it silently, which is perhaps
correct given their us

fine and fixes the problem.

I am unhappy with this workaround because the ligatures worked well in for
example Incspape.
As a workaround it would have been sufficient not to use DejaVu in Firefox
instead of affecting other programs that now suffer from an inferior
typographical quality when using DejaVu.

The file you've posted simply is not a jpeg-file but a windows-bmp-file
(check it e.g. via file command on command-line). Gimp tries to open it
with the jpeg-filter, but fails with the above mentioned error-message.
Rename it to rubberchicken.bmp and it will work.

I use a pivot monitor. When I rotate the screen with xrandr -o left or
Grandr, totem gets the aspect ratio wrong. For instance a 4:3 film is
shown as 3:4, that means higher than wide. It is also not possible to
correct the aspect ratio from the GUI

Yes, they've actually made it usuable just in time.
However, all of your comments are still valid, except about the default size.
The list is still inconsidered, and most of these extensions return too many
results to be usefull.

Same problem here: sometimes it shows up immedeatly, like it should. But most
of the times I have to wait for about one minute.
Should be fixed before Gutsy is being released.

Unfortunately, the gtkrc will not affect the panel properly. For
example, if you tried to have gtkrc draw a 'flat box' or a custom drawn
element for the panel, it will not apply using the class overrides.
Apparently the gtkrc for the panel exclusively was to handle this, but
has gotten lost
After updating, the display looks good, but it still shifts if you try
to select some individual characters or strings.
