I actually have the same problem.
Nautilus seems to freeze but it doesn't completely. Nautilus come back
to live after approximately 2 minutes. It freezes while accessing large
Fat32 partitions, 200Mb in my case with 7 folders that contain a huge
quantity of files. The USB HD seems to rest during
Confirming bug here also, using gusty.
Crossfading fixes the issue.

I think the problem lies within the code that the system call
sys_statfs64 executes, perhaps when it calls the vfs code for the vfat
file system.
I straced sudo nautilus to stop it sending the request to any existing
process:
1. killall gnome-volume-manager
2. Attach drive
3. sudo -i
4. mkdir ath
As discussed this should be handled in gnome-settings-daemon.

"Fix committed" means that the next time they (GTK) make a release, the
new code will be in their source packages. We'll package them up and
release them for Ubuntu.
GTK is still on 2.11. This fix will definitely be in by the 2.12 final
release which will be included with Gutsy.

If we restrict ourselves to using the Plain greeter and a dwell gesture
to start onboard, the only thing needed is a new line that defines the
dwell gesture to start onboard.
Considering that onboard is installed by default (I think at least so)

Exactly same behaviour for me when editing a "alt" tag .. gedit process
consumes all CPU, eventually freezing the whole gnome session, just
mouse moves and crtl+alt+backspace allows to restart the session .. once
the session is re-opened, I have to kill the CPU-consuming gedit process

As reducing the content of above file preferences.txt to smaller lines is read

I've tried to disable the desktop effects option, but have no idea how to do
so.
I restarted the computer a couple of times and have stayed away from the
