With totem-gstreamer they work most of the time but often I get an "Internal
data flow error" (screenshot attached). When that error appears if I just
click ok and then click on the play button, it works and the subtitles show
up fine. That error only appears with movies that have subtitles.

Hmm, that's not it... After a few more updates rolled in, I tried to
reproduce this bug on another system. I could not. Coming to think of
it, with the other system I did do a dist-upgrade AND apply the console
option at the same time, which fixed the problem.

The panel size you can set in the GUI is 25 minimum but when you set it
manually in gconf-editor to 24 all icons are the right size.
I say all icons because the icon of my contact-applet suddenly changed

Yes, adding console output does fix this problem for me. It seems like
that does make a difference to hal, or the lack of console output
somehow screws up libpam-foreground or something?
Either way, it now seems like an upstart bug and not a hal bug anymore.

Upstart technically just runs hal the same way that sysvinit used to,
except for one small detail ... the stdin/out/err of the init script
will be /dev/null instead of /dev/console.
Try adding "console output" to /etc/event.d/rc2 and see whether that
fixes the problem.

I'm experiencing this bug with network-manager 0.6.2, but it occurs
immediately after login after booting the computer fresh (i.e., not from
suspend or hibernate). Unless I can quickly fill in the first keyring
login request, network-manager will pop up up to two more keyring login
