Somehow, my Windows partition ended up being mounted in the wrong place
with the wrong permissions. Presumely this is used for detecting the
type of the partition:

it's a real problem because in edgy AFAIK all the GTK themes are cairo-
based.. (I checked and in edgy clearlooks, clarius and human pose
problem).
in dapper you can choose "LegacyHuman" and you're OK. in edgy... you'd have to
build clearlooks 1.x from source???

I'm having similar trouble. I haven't yet tried it from the command
line, but here are my symptoms:
The "Write Image" dialog takes several minutes to appear, in the interim
between when an the "write to disc" button is clicked or a .iso file's
context menu's "write to disc" entry is selected, CPU
BTW: this was with 2.15.7-0ubuntu2

minutes).

I can confirm this behavior. It's not hal, it's gnome-volume-manager
that's mounting the partitions. This is probably caused by gparted
calling an IOCTL to re-read the partition table before it tries to make
the change. That part, at least, is good behavior but gparted needs to
have some way to

I applied an update everal days ago, and ever since, gnome-terminal
redraws very slowly. This shows up in output (i.e. - scrolling text) and
while movin the window around.
All other windows redraw normally when I move them around the scree
reinstalling will make no difference and not usually useful on linux,
user datas a not created during the installation. Just fix the owner of
that directory and wait if that happens again

It means that if gnome-power-manager is running, the button does nothing
at al. If gnome-power-manager is not running, the normal acpi rules
work fine, the the power button puts my laptop in S3 suspend.
