I spent some time studying this and came to the conclusion that the
hanging is within the X11 library, in the (potentially) infinite loop
in _XimRead. The bug should be reassigned to libx11-6
(I'll document the problem in xterm's manpage, as well).

utempter: /dev/ttyp2 belongs to another user
Checking the ownership on that, I see that I own it (which is the

xterm patch #279 implements the improvement I suggested. To actually fix
the problem reported will take further changes, to libutempter itself.
(I might do that, though iirc libutempter lacks a maintainer...).
