Could you try:
. Switch to VT
. Log in as same use as X session on VT
. run 'sleep 6 ; DISPLAY=:0 xrandr' on VT
. switch to X VT before 6 seconds have elapsed, then switch back after 6
seconds have elapsed
. Check output to see what mode

Just a bit more feedback on this -
Redhat, and OpenSolaris, amongst others are switching from RealVNC to
tigervnc, as RealVNC seem to have dropped their opensourc
