Some more info:
After some (big) package updates the problem went away.
vlc was updated, but libxcb1 and dragonplayer were not:
ii dragonplayer4:15.08.2-1
ii libxcb1:amd64 1.11.1-1
ii vlc 2.2.1-5+b1
The breeze dependencies are now:

I just did a dist-upgrade (xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:1.2.1-3 -> 1:1.3.0-1) and
the error does not appear anymore.
Tested with 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 on Linux 2.6.18-3-amd64.
