It is xorg stuff:

Further information and some more fiddling about:
* I am able to get things to crash again using the xorg.conf that
resulted from the xf86->org upgrade. Disabling direct rendering
stops the crash.
* The xorg.conf produced by installing xserver-xorg doesn't not
crash as direct ren
