Hi, after wasting half an hour searching the web, another vote for this.
please create /usr/share/doc/xcursor-themes/README.Debian containing
a one line description of each of the cursor sets and how to change
them.
for example:

it's there, just undocumented.
run
update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
and choose "core" f
this is in fact a completely optional package.
In etch the industrial-cursor-theme package rdepends:
gtk2-engines-industrial
gnome-themes
gnome-desktop-environment
and xcursor-themes packge rdepends:
Reverse Depends:
xlibs-data (dummy/transitional)
Everything works fine without xcursor-
Haven't been able to reproduce so far. :-)
