I seem to have found two ways to work around the problem.
If I:
1) Compile and install a version of xserver-xorg-video-trident with the
two lines in WAITFORVSYNC commented out.
2) Start the computer normally, so that gdm starts. At this point, I just
get a blank screen which is seemingly unres
