Sorry, this was a bit premature. My Xserver froze with this setup, too.
I will continue my tests.

1.2.4 has been available in experimental for a while. It will enter

There are screen artefacts at random times. The artefacts were not there
with Debian Etch, but are there with Debian Lenny.
