Falling back further, to xserver-xorg-video-ati version 6.6.3-2, I can't
reproduce this and everything seem to work fine.

I noticed GDM failed to boot when I installed Debian Etch on
VMware 64 bit environment.
Because xserver-xorg-video-all hasn't the dependency against
xserver-xorg-video-vmware, xorg wrote "apm" as driver instead
of "vmware".
