It turns out that I had been commenting the wrong
section in Xorg.conf- I had commented out the 'load
modules' lines when it was the module path lines that
needed to be commented out. I have corrected this and
no longer get errors about bitmap and pcmidata

upgraded to 7.0.11 and it's back again!
It does seem to be running the main xsession this time though, since it
tries to run twm (which I don't have installed) and opens some xterms and

FYI:
I figured that the X symlink was probably just a left over and not all that
important, so I tried deleting it and doing a reconfigure of the x packages.
This caused the /usr/X11R6/bin folder to be deleted and a new symlink to

Debian patches don't go in unless quilt is installed.
quilt was not installed even after I did 'apt-get build-dep xdm'.
