I am seing this also, sortof, when i VT switch away from X, and then skill or
stop X in some way, the radeonfb text console is corrupted. When i restart X
blindly, then the console is ok again. When i kill X from inside X, then there
is no problem.

Ah, i guess the problem comes from the card having both a radeon pci id and a
second function which is listed as 1002:5d44, which displays as ATI
Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] (Secondary) in lspci output, and it is
this one that X is matching, not the primary one X knows about.

Unfortunately, I have not had any success finding out what the register pokes
do. My searches have not yielded any results. I emailed the submitter of the
earliest patch with this poke (the linux kernel framebuffer). He has not
responded.
