I asked the submitter for feedback on 13 August; I never received any.
I'm not willing to move forward on this without a reasonable design
proposal, or information on how I can ask the kernel which video card it's
using to drive the virtual consoles.

I am having about the same problem. When I start
mplayer with '-vo xv' the window is transparent. I am
also using a mythtv and it is hosed up when trying to
play back files or watch live tv.
I have tried everything you suggest and can't get it
