I was installing a sarge system to see if a bug was fixed, and I noticed that
the xfonts-base package is not required by xserver-xfree86. I noticed because
the Xserver wouldn't start because I had not fixed font installed. After
installing xfonts-base, I had no problems.
Is there a reason that

Bug #174685 not resolved.
I'm having the exact same problem. Downgrading to 4.2.1-3 fixes the
problem.
Only Quake3 affected. UT2003/Quake1/Quake2 works 100%
I'm running Quake3 ver 1.32
