There is a bug in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99xfree86-common_start in 4.1.0-7:
Change:
exec "$REALSTARTUP"
to:
exec $REALSTARTUP

Could people apply the following patch and tell me if things continue
to work properly for them?
Especially Emacs users.
Having separate alt and meta keys appears to be popular with no one,
hence this change.
If you want alt and meta on different keys, leave the file as-is.
Thanks!

Concerning Tom Joseph's solution to the starting problems of 6pre7v3:
I was testing my recently installed system just now
and found out that after correcting /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99xfree86-common_start
(exec $REALSTARTUP instead of exec "$REALSTARTUP" ) root could run
`startx' but other users

Having separate alt and meta keys is one of the things that really
impressed me about Debian in
i'm running woody on an Ultra 1 200e with a Creator3D card and XFree86
4.1.0.1. the box is running a vger kernel compiled from today's (06 oct)
sources, and the following occurs with 2.2.19 as well.
starting X fails with the following error:
(II) LoadModule: "ramdac"
(II) Loading /usr/X11
