The original problem in this report should be useless now. Even if
dpkg-reconfigure does not select the right modes, the driver should not
care about them at all (the "mode" line) and detect the correct modes at
runtime.
So, apart from the dpkg-reconfigure problem which does not matter

I have resolved the problem adding the line
vga=791
to my lilo.conf. I use 1024x768 resolution, so the correct value may change
depending on yours.
