Regarding my inquiry from a few days ago, the problem went away,
since a Xfree86.org CVS tree checked out recently gave me the Render
extension, so it's kinda obvious that Debian unstable Xfree86
packages aren't synced with the latest CVS, which is what I thougt
anyway.

have RENDER support for Mach64 (=the non-Radeon non-r128 part of the
ati driver); it got added with patch no. 7[1] right after the
