You should probably disable KMS with radeon.modeset=0 on the kernel
command line. You can also disable radeonfb with vi

Dear Maintainer,
In order to get 3D acceleration in Squeeze, I had to install the radeon driver
from firmware-linux-nonfree. However, in Wheezy after installing
firmware-linux-nonfree I still get no 3D.
