I guess we could add the -gtk variant at the end of the alternative,

isn't compiz-gtk what you want to be installing? (maybe with a few
other package

compiz depends on compiz-gnome, for GNOME integration. Please can it
just recommend it, rather than depend?
I'd like to use compiz without pulling in a load of GNOME packages.
