945GM seems to be pretty reliable on KMS though, so I'm not too worr
I saw the same bug on my thinkpadR60:
With i915.modeset=0 X does not start. The screen remains
black, keyboard unusable. The powerbutton worked and I could
shutdown. So I think the system was no frozen.
syslog showed no related messages.
