Thanks for your response, editing the /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf fixed the
problem.
I don't really understand why the bts hasn't cc'ed me...

/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
change the content to:
options radeon modeset=0
reboot
