Same situation for me here, but interestingly it's only one user's account that has this problem. Unfortunately, it's the one account that I really need to use X on. I got it to work again by commenting out the -VMode/+VMode sections of /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc (as below). Of course, this disabl
