thank you for your reply. In the meantime, I decided to update my
broken system, by doing:
dpkg --get-selections on a newly updated
Debian system that had a working desk top and
dpkg --set-selections on on the broken machine .
I guess that this forced
retitle 284764 xserver-xfree86: server crashes when "-configure" option supplied
tag 284764 + woody upstream
