i just tried dpkg --purge --force-depends xlibs and after that removed everything from /etc/X11/xkb except /etc/X11/xkb/compiled and /etc/X11/xkb/xkbcomp. after reinstallation of xlibs AltGr now works again, xev now shows ISO_Level3_Shift. thanks for your help. regards klaus
