I also encountered the segfault of xftcache when called with or without
an arbitrary font directory name as parameter.
Adding the line
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
to the file /etc/X11/XftConfig stops this on my installation.
After this the postinst installation script of xfonts-sc
