I upgrade my system to sid, and get the same problem.
Package: libgl1-mesa-dri
Version: 10.6.3-1
X doesn't starts. if I remove the package, with apt-get purge
libgl1-mesa-dri X starts normally, but without 3D acceleration.

during an apt-get upgrade today, my xserver-xorg-input-synaptics was
upgraded to 1.8.0-1 and the same problem arise.
I'm not using an Elantech mouse, but an ALPS:

pdates for my system,
including xserver-xorg-input-kdb, gdm and nfs-common. Some of the
libraries affect a significant number of services, so manually
restarting each with be tedious at best.

I'm not sure of what happened exactly, but it seems that the X server update
has broken the nvidia driver.
Ok, the xserver upgrade had broken my nvidia driver.
I only had to reinstall it to solve the problem.

from an X terminal window, the X server crashes.
Compiz was working fine until my last apt-get update
which upgraded xserver-xorg to version 7.1.0-7.
Hoorah! Fixed! Please close this bug.
The upgrade of X from 7.0.0 to 7.1.1 (downloaded from Debian testing on 2006-10-27) fixed the problem.
Both video cards work, and the int10 POST of the second card works. Yeah!
