update of xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu was in may, so problems in the
driver would have shown up. There has been an update to libdrm-amdgpu1
recently and that might be the cause, but I am not sure.
If this is the wrong package, please re-assign.

As you can imagine, this is pretty annoying. Any hints how to solve
this issue would be much appreciated.

Moin,
I have the same problem. Starting iceweasel/firefox causes a x server crash

Any chance that this fix would make it into the 1.10.2 (unstable)
soon? I find more and more software trigger this bug: fvwm
(fvwmbuttons), licq, kcachegrind, some of the xscreensaver
applications all would cause an immediate segfault.

hat had to be moved
manually:
* gv 3.5.8-30.2
* rdesktop 1.3.1-1.1
* xprt - actually it got removed by apt-get, but too late, the
installation of x11-common has been failed
* opera 8.50-20050916.6 - I know, it's third party stuff, but so is xv also
You could file a conflict agains these also.
t a package that officially does not even exist?
Thank for your help

Now the question is how did the symlink end up pointing to /bin/true?

After upgrade from xorg 6.9 to 7.0 /usr/bin/Xorg should be
used instead of /usr/bin/X. But /usr/bin/Xorg is not suid root.
Thus it is inpossible to use startx & co to start x as a user.

Interestingly X itself doesn't print any error why it couldnt
start x, it just exits. There is not even a warning.
IMHO this should be fixed to, to avoid problems during and after
upgrade
