That's a very old kernel, please use 2.6.32-5-686 which is current in
testing and unstable.

No, all they are telling you to do is go back to an older version and
merge a couple of changes needed to let it build with a recent X.org.
When it is fixed I'll update the package.

the latest upgrade -- dependency problems seem to have been resolved).

I had some packages installed which were related to fglrx -- after
removing them, the readeon (without "hd") driver did work again!
