I installed 3.14-rc5 to see if it would help, but Xorg still fails
starting. Let me know if there is anything else I can try, or any more

Sven, I sent you the dpkg.log in private since it is rather huge. Feel
free to publish the relevant parts as needed.
As for kernels, I was running 3.12 previously, but no luck running Xorg
with any of these too:

xorg was running like a charm until recently. Since I ran safe-upgrade
yesterday, Xorg fails starting. See info attached. Let me know if there
is any more info I can provide.

more info about this. i just killed xscreenserver from the console again,
except this time x crashed. the line 'SetGrabKeysState - disabled' appears when
the screensaver starts.

after xscreensaver starts, if i try to type in my password to unlock the

i have a test file called 中文繁-üߢ.mp3. if i run /bin/ls, the filename
is displayed correctly. if i run /bin/ls --color=auto, the chinese
characters are replaced by dashed squares. copy paste still works.
