Woo hoo! That did it. It also got rid of an annoying white line at the bottom of my screen that's
been there forever. Thanks so much! I've donated $25 to the Debian project as a token of my gratitude.

Unfortunately, installing the new driver didn't fix the problem. I'm attaching the Xorg.0.log file.
The new driver does seem to be installed; I can see it in dselect.
