On further experimentation, I found that if I run fluxbox I don't have this
problem. It only happens in gnome.

On my thinkpad t30, after installing Debian Squeeze, I configured the power
management to only blank the screen when the lid is closed. For some unknown
reason there is no "do nothing" option.

At seemingly random times X locks up completely. The UI will not respond to any
input except to go to a virtual terminal.
If I kill X from that terminal, the display manager will not come back, the
screen remains black with a cursor.
