thank you so much! Everything works perfectly now.
Though effective, the solution is not all that intuitive, and the fact
that /run was introduced by Poettering only quite recently and thus is
not that well known doesn't help either ;)

When using "Xorg -configure" and then "X -config /root/xorg.conf.new",
I get the following output to the command line:
