Just prevent installation by apt-pinning:
/etc/apt/preferences
Package: libxrender*
Pin: version 1:0.9.7-1+deb7u1+b1
Pin-Priority: -1
Hope it gets fixed soon.

My X-server crashed, gdm tried to restart it, but failed. So I had to reboot.

Seems like your plan did work out after all :)
Although I saw nothing specific in the changelog, version 1:6.8.0-1 in
unstable seems to fix this bug for my laptop. Feel free to close the
bug.
Thanks

Unfortunately, these changes seem to break backlight on some laptops,

Maybe this should be an option in the xorg.conf file, if autodetecting
the method to deal with the backlight controls is not really easy? So
you could even cover new models which might need this messy fix.

On my Compaq Evo N800w I can control the backlight with Fn-F7/Fn-F8.
Upto version 1:6.7.196-2 this did work, for any later version it fails
and those keys even
recompiled libpixman with gcc 4.1 as suggested by other
and this just works fine.

The backtrace looks certainly wrong.
If anyone anyone can point out how to do better
(or how to use gdb to debug x on a single machine)
i would be willing to help.

don't know if that means that it's a Nedit problem or not? At least other
graphical apps like "worker" are working via ssh -X where Nedit fails.

Difficult. There's no X Server running on that machine and it's located
1000 km away from me (Karlsruhe <-> Rostock).

course, this requires that you don't start the X server with

Xnest :1 -query localhost works here, so I assume that there's no -nolisten
tcp left in the configs.

The server (windfluechter) runs on Sarge and has xbase-clients installed
(XFree86), whereas the notebook runs on Sid with new Xorg7. The XForwarding
is broken since the upgrade to Xorg7. It doesn't matter whether I use ssh -X
or ssh -Y. The result is the same. Is that a Xorg7 bug or a ssh bug? Any
